Globial Warming And How It Effects Your Sales

What has global warming have to do with sales? You might ask. Actually it will have quite a bit to do with sales over the coming years. The only way a sale is made legally is if the product or service will benefit the customer. That is the way it has always been and is the way it should always be.

First let me explain what I feel Global Warming is and its primary cause.
Global warming, although the notion has taken a long time to catch on, is here to stay.

I to was one of those that thought this was just another one of those half baked ideas that might or might not be true.

Also like most Americans I have been complacent with the idea of cheap and abundant energy.

The truth is even at three or four dollars a gallon gasoline would still be cheap. I say this with the idea in mind of how many man hours a person has to work today to buy a tank of gas or diesel compared to what it would cost in man hours years ago when I first started driving.
When I left home back in 1960 the first three jobs I held paid me about 35 dollars a week. At that rate of income I could have bought about a hundred gallons of gasoline a week if that is all I bought with the money I had earned. For the most part gasoline in those days was only 28 to 35 cents a gallon most of the time.

Today those same entry level type jobs will pay you about three to four hundred dollars week. This amount of money would pay for about a hundred gallons of gas if it was priced at three or four dollars a gallon. Of course it is not costing near that much now. Even though gas has gone up a little recently unleaded regular is still running about $2.13 per gallon in the part of the country where I live. This means it actually cost about half of what it did in 1960 which is 46 years ago.

Ok what has the price of gasoline; fuel oil and electricity have to do with Global Warming. I should say plenty because all it takes to explain global warming is a real short lesson in physics. When you were in school you were taught that everything we grow is only possible because the sun shines on the earth and produces the energy that is stored in plant life. Then animals, people and insects eat the plant life and each other to have their own energy sources. If that is all that happens there is no problem.

However for millions of years plant life that was not eaten fell into bogs and river bottoms and then decomposed to become stored as energy in the oil and coal we now enjoy.

Then along came the industrial age and we started burning oil for energy to heat and run machinery there by producing what is called Green House Gases. When we do this it is sort of like shorting out a battery.
The sun spent millions of years to produce the oil and coal that we have burned in about a hundred years or so and still continue to burn. The atmosphere reflects and holds this expended energy in so the overall temperature of the earth increases. Over this hundred year period we just released a few million years worth of the sun’s stored energy right inside the atmosphere. The increase is not a great amount, just a few degrees but it is enough to upset Mother Nature’s balance and so the polar caps are melting faster and the weather is changing.

I just went through hurricane Rita a few years after going through tropical storm Alicia. My home suffered horrendous damage due to both storms. After going through these two storms Global Warming is definitely getting my attention along with everyone else.

As bad as the weather situation is for people all over the earth, don’t forget the tsunami victims, there is still a positive side to all of this for sales people on every continent.

In spite of Global Warming people are still going to keep on driving their SUV’s, mowing the lawn and do a little boating on the weekend. However this is where a good salesperson can shine. You just need to get with companies that produce energy efficient products such as attic insulation, heat reflective coatings and energy efficient appliances and lighting. You could also sell energy efficient SUV’s, cars, boats and lawn equipment.

Believe it or not one out of tune lawn mower can produce more pollution than 30 well tuned car engines. So you might look for a solution to this problem. For example there are actually lawn mowers that are electric and use a battery not a cord so there is no starting problem and they are light weight and easy to push and cut grass like mad. For a small lawn this is a perfect choice. It is just a matter of time before most cars and SUV’s as well as light trucks will be hybrids. These new systems actually perform just as well or better than the standard powered vehicles. The only problem at the present is the long wait to get delivery of one.

Just think of all of the old energy wasting products that you have in your home right now. You are not going to just throw then away but when it comes time to replace them you will be smart if you get one that is energy efficient. When a light bulb burns out at my house it is replace with a florescent bulb at about a 75% energy savings or more.

Most people are going to be thinking this way from now on. So now is the time to start pushing energy efficiency if you want to have the best possible chance of making a sale.

There are a lot of ways to save the planet from pollution. For example a couple of weeks ago I bought an electric fireplace insert for my fireplace. I run it at zero heat as I have a highly energy efficient heat pump to heat the house. I love having a fire in the fireplace but now I don’t have to haul in wood and produce smoke to pollute the atmosphere and it keeps the air quality in my home from getting poor.

More importantly for me it looks exactly like a real fire that I enjoy seeing in the fireplace.

As a matter of fact when I set the device out on the floor after I took it out of the box and the instructions said plug it in first and check the light bulbs before installing it.

It scared me to death when I plugged it in and the flames shot out of it. I thought I had a bonfire right there in the living room. I was hoping it would look nice but I could never imagine it would be that real looking. You cannot believe how real looking these things are unless you own one and if need be they will produce a good amount of heat as well.

Energy savings and efficiency are going to be some of the most important key words of the future. Be sure and try to sell a product where you can push this benefit and you will benefit your pocket book as well as the customer’s pocket book and the rest of mankind’s health, wealth and piece of mind to. This will truly be a situation where everybody wins and wins big.
