Building the Local Economy by Building your Business

How to build the local economy by building your business

This is the story of how Nick the Barber accomplished this with very little effort and very little money.

Somewhere in a large Midwestern city there is a fellow named Nick the Barber.

Nick has a successful local barber shop and makes a good living running his shop.
He has a fellow working with him that takes care of the shoe shine stand and three other barbers and two hair stylist who rent stations from him.

The other day as he was watching the cable news station between customers he took notice of the President of the United States speaking to a very attentive audience.

The President was explaining his stimulus package that he feels the country needs to help jump start the economy. This package would put some money in the pockets of the American consumer so they will be able to go out into the market place and buy goods and services.
Doing this would help merchants and service companies to boost their sales and super charge the attitude of the entire spending public.

In reality this would start a buzz all around the country that could keep the country from going into a deep recession.

This gets Nick to thinking. He thought about it all day and came to the conclusion that he could also do something to stimulate the economy and boost his own business at the same time.

He sat down with his crew and explained his idea to them. They all thought it was great and told him they were behind him one hundred percent. With everybody in agreement Nick decided to get the ball rolling.

Nick set down and wrote out a short classified newspaper ad and then called the local paper and had it placed, starting in the next Sunday’s paper.

He had the ad placed in the help wanted section of the paper.

The ad was worded as follows:

If you are down and out and in need of a job please come to Nick’s Barber Shop and Hair Salon at (address) and get a free shampoo, hair cut or trim. Ladies are welcome as well and can also get their hair done. Applicants are instructed to bring their best pair of shoes with them for a free shoe shine.

This will help you put your best foot forward when you step into the next employment office.

The ad went on to say the offer was limited to the first one hundred people who applied for the free service during the next week only.

Nick was thinking ahead. He also made sure there were employment ads as well as brochures, and articles on how to excel at being interviewed that could be read while waiting or when setting in the barber chair.

Nick had a couple of computers at the back of the shop so that these potential new hires could have internet access to various employment web sites and information on how to put together their resumes. He also had a printer in place so that they could write and print their resume and take it with them to their interviews.

If this was not enough he also had two or three friends that were in the clothing industry and without promising anyone anything he did have permission to send some of the people who needed a little dressing up over to see them and get their appearance up to par.

What do you think happened?

Business was brisk at the first of the week and one hundred and three people showed up that week to take advantage of the free offer presented to them. And yes he did take care of the extra three that came in.

All of a sudden these people who were really in a mind set that prevented them from going out and making futures for themselves were getting turned around and striving to do better.

Most of the people did get employment by using their fast action attitude adjustments and going where the jobs were.

Some people may not realize this but some of the best potential employees on earth are people who have overcome alcoholism.

These people have already overcome a horrendous problem and once they find someone who will take a chance on them they will always treat this as their very last chance and in most cases this could very well be true.

Most of these people that Nick and friends helped did a complete one hundred and eighty degree turn around in their attitudes and were absolutely unbeatable people.

The reason they did this was someone showed some faith in them. They were not given a free lunch just one good chance to get out there and make something of themselves.

The result of all of this was a lot of companies got a big boost in their productivity as these people came in with their can do attitudes and got hired. Once they got the job they did get it done.

Nick and his friends came out pretty well to. Not only did they get the warm fuzzy feeling from helping all of these people but they also got tremendous increases in their own businesses and incomes.

The people they helped, got jobs and then told the two hundred or so friends of theirs about Nick the barber and his other associates that worked with Nick to get this done.

The average number of people that come by and sign the book at a funeral home when someone passes away is roughly two hundred.

So when you do the math these one hundred and three people almost sent more business to Nick and his associates than they could handle.

Nick had to expand his shop and rent out two more barber chairs and an extra hair salon station just to take care of the new business.

Even the shoe shine operator had to get an assistant.

Did Nick expand the American economy? You bet he did and the businesses that all of these new hires are now spending their new pay checks with, appreciate the shot in the arm to.

This is a case where everyone wins. Some of these people who were living under bridges or in the back of abandon warehouses are now renting apartments or buying owner financed housing.

Some were single women with children now earning a living wage.

Also if you noticed this program did not depend on nor cost the government one thin dime either but the government will get the payroll taxes off of all of these paychecks. So they will win as well.

There are jobs out there for most anyone who needs one but a person has to get his head on straight and want a job as well as be willing to apply for it to be able to get one.

The area where I live is now building an expansion to a large oil refinery and when they finish in 2010 it will be the largest oil refinery ever built in America.

What that means is right now today we desperately need 6000 workers in the local area. Most are construction jobs because we need places for all of these people and their families to live, eat, get educated and have fun.

This means there is new construction going on in three counties for new homes, new apartment houses and new places of business to serve this big influx of people.

The outlook for the Golden Triangle area here in Texas is great.

If your area in need of an uplift though you could take a hint from Nick and put more people to work which will put even more people to work to serve them.

Now the truth is this, there obviously is no such person as Nick the Barber as he is a totally fictional character but his system or something similar could work to really jump start your area.

At any rate this might get you to thinking and you may come up with something far superior.

In any case this could be a good way to get a barber shop off the ground, Don't you think?

Thank you
